Since he was young my grandad had a most sought-after knack
He could fix any gadget with a single hammer whack
All except a carriage clock he kept up on the mantle
"King William" was the name engraved upon its cold brass handle
When grandpa died he willed "Old Bill" would be my one bequest
I looked upon that little clock as something of a test
But though I tried a thousand tricks with Billy on my knee
His stubborn little hour-hand never even twitched for me
My Little Willy won't Dong-dong-dong
Upright and proud, but not very loud
My "Little Willy" won't Dong-Dong-Dong
But one day he might take your breath away
As time went on I lost all hope so Willy gathered dust
Until one day I blurted out "I'll fix my clock or bust!"
With William standing fast and firm and proud upon lap
I snatched my old lump hammer up and struck the fateful tap
But bonking Billy on the rear did nothing much to wake him
And now I've lost my joi de vivre, I'm really rather shaken
Old Willy's standing tall upon my little bedside table
But I don't dare to go outside - I'm not sure that I'm able
But I have a dream - and in that dream
My Little Willy goes Dong-dong-dong
Upright and proud, sweet strong and loud
My "Little Willy" goes Ding-Dang-Dong
O! He would really take your breath away
Solo
This morning my new sweetheart came and knocked upon my door
Because she hadn't seen me for at least a week or more
I don't know how she got into my home or up the stairs
But there she was and so she got an eyeful of my wares
My Little Willy went Dong-dong-dong
Upright and proud, sweet strong and loud
My "Little Willy" went Dong-Ding-Dang
O! He would really take your breath away
What happened next I can't explain or truly understand
She grabbed my beater by the shaft but then it slipped her hand
It must have hit the wall behind and given Bill a clip
A century of silence stopped when Willy did a tick!
He did one more and then again till ticking filled the place
Her eyes aglow, she snatched him up and buffed his little face
"I've never seen one quite as old as this" she said, aghast
And then she threw my willy out the window through the glass
My Little Willy went Dong-dong-dong
Upright and proud, sweet strong and loud
My "Little Willy" went Ding-Dang-Dong
O! He would really take your breath away
