I remember as a child,
the waves would get so wild
that more than shells would wash ashore -
but that was in the time before...
I will not recall those memories,
instead let's talk of pleasantries,
majestic sunset down on the sands.
When I was young we would hold hands.
But in the summer of twenty-twelve,
a painful memory (shall I delve?),
your life was cruelly ripped away.
I will never forget that day.
The shells we had collected
could never have detected
the cancer growing in your brain.
Death was coming bringing pain.
Mother to me once, ever more,
two lives I've lived, one before.
This shell, see here, in my open hand!
It convinced me to start a band!
In memory of your passing soul,
instead of leaving behind a hole,
this shell we found one early morn'
is inspiration for my horn.
Beachcombing remains dear to me,
in Heaven or the sea.
